Rub the steak with 1 teaspoon of salt and garlic powder for flavor.
Preheat a large skillet until it reaches a very high temperature.
Pour in 2 teaspoons of oil, then add half of the steak to the pan and sear for under a minute on each side until a nice brown crust forms.
Remove the first batch of steak from the skillet, add another teaspoon of oil, and repeat the cooking process with the remaining steak. Set aside once done.
Lower the heat to medium, add an additional teaspoon of oil, and toss in the sliced onions.
Sauté for 2 minutes, or until they become tender, then incorporate the chopped tomatoes.
Season the mixture with additional salt to your preference, approximately 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon. Sprinkle in black pepper and cumin, then reduce the heat to medium-low.
Pour in 1/4 cup of water and let it simmer for a few minutes to form a sauce. If necessary, add more water and adjust the seasoning to your liking.
Bring the steak back into the skillet along with any juices that have accumulated, stirring everything together well before removing from the heat.
Serve the dish over rice or a vegetable rice alternative for a low-carb option, topped with a sunny-side-up egg.
