Ingredients

  • 1 lb Italian turkey or chicken sausage
  • 1 yellow bell pepper
  • 1 1/3 cups crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • kosher salt and fresh black pepper
  • 6 1-inch thick slices Italian Bread
  • olive oil spray
  • dried Italian seasoning or Parsley
  • 2 tbsp grated cheese
  • garlic clove
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 3 cloves garlic

Instructions

  1. 1

In a medium-sized non-stick frying pan, brown the sausage over medium-high heat, breaking it apart as it cooks into small pieces until fully cooked, approximately 5 to 6 minutes.

  2. 2

Incorporate the onions and garlic, continuing to sauté for an additional 2 minutes.

  3. 3

Transfer the mixture to the slow cooker, then add the bell peppers, crushed tomatoes, rosemary, and freshly cracked black pepper.

  4. 4

Cover the slow cooker and set it to low, allowing it to cook for 4 hours.

  5. 5

Prepare the garlic bread by arranging 6 slices of bread on a baking sheet. Lightly spray with olive oil and sprinkle Italian seasoning and Parmesan cheese on both sides. Give it another light spritz of oil and broil it about 6 inches from the heating element, watching closely until the top turns a golden brown, which should take about 3 to 5 minutes. Once toasted, take it out of the oven and rub a garlic clove over the surface of the bread.

  6. 6

On each slice of bread, place 1/2 cup of the meat mixture and top with approximately 2 1/2 tablespoons of shredded mozzarella. Return the bread to the oven for about 1 to 2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted to your liking.
