Begin by setting your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare a 9-inch round baking pan by applying cooking spray, then place a round piece of parchment paper at the bottom and spray the parchment as well.
In a spacious mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt using a whisk. Put this mixture aside for now.
In another bowl of medium size, whisk together the buttermilk, melted butter, sugar, applesauce, eggs, and vanilla extract until the mixture is uniform and smooth. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, gently folding them together until just combined. It's alright if there are a few lumps; be cautious not to overmix.
Carefully incorporate the berries into the mixture, folding them in gently until they're evenly distributed and a few lumps remain.
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing it out into an even layer. Evenly sprinkle the leftover sugar over the top.
Bake the buckle in the preheated oven until the surface turns a beautiful golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, which should take about 40 to 45 minutes. Enjoy while warm.
